Neighborhood Fundraising Network is requesting Event
Sponsorship for the Seventh Annual
Southern California People of Color HIV/AIDS Conference,
held in conjunction with global, national and local
HIV/AIDS awareness efforts on Saturday, December
1, through 2, 2007 at the Crowne Resort
Plaza in Redondo Beach, from 9:00 a.m. to the closing
plenary at 3:30 p.m. We anticipate hosting
400 conference attendees this year. This
conference will combine both public and private sectors
of the healthcare industry by reaching out to medical
professionals, caregivers, community leaders, at-risk
minority groups, youths, and women of color in order
to educate, motivate, and support their
involvement in the prevention of HIV/AIDS, unintended
teen pregnancy and other sexual health risks.
Information and action are our greatest allies.
The alarming facts: **Overall, the State
of California has the second highest number of acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) cases in the United
States; ** In 2004, Los Angeles County and San Diego
County ranked within the top three regions for most
reported cases of AIDS in Southern California. In
the United States, 54% of new infections occur among
African Americans and 64 percent of new infections
in women occur in African American women. Children
of African American descent represent almost two-thirds
(62 percent) of all reported pediatric AIDS cases.
Although only 15 percent of the adolescent population
in the United States is African American, over 60
percent of AIDS cases reported in 1999 among 13-19
year olds were among African Americans
The Southern California African-American HIV/AIDS
Conference is designed to bring critical leadership
together to positively impact health outcomes within
communities of color.
Registrants of the conference will receive the latest
information and resources from a culturally-diverse
panel of HIV/AIDS experts. In addition to plenary sessions,
there will be workshops, educational booths, displays,
and literature on up-to-date prevention and treatment
modalities. Multidisciplinary experts will conduct
comprehensive workshops developed to ensure that the
informational needs of women of color, youth, persons
living with HIV/AIDS, gay men of color, service providers,
and the general public receive the most factual information
available regarding prevention, care and treatment,
socio-political issues, and more.
Experts in their fields will conduct comprehensive
workshop tracks to:
- Provide the most recent information available regarding
HIV/AIDS treatment and resources;
- Provide interactive forums for the discussion of
HIV/AIDS issues in communities of color;
- Bring together medical professionals, caregivers,
community leaders, and client/consumers in order
to motivate, educate, and support their involvement
on the subject of HIV/AIDS;
- Furnish a framework for communication between professionals,
diverse ethnic groups, and HIV/AIDS infected and
affected consumers;
- Create a comprehensive community support program
that helps families, men, women and youth and embrace
healthier lifestyles.
Those who will benefit from the conference include
physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician
assistants, prevention specialists, health planners,
social workers, counselors, community members, certified
health education specialists, pharmacists, administrators,
correction officers, substance abuse counselors, caregivers,
service providers, and others affected by HIV/AIDS
either personally or professionally.
